Should You Always Charge a Smartwatch to 100%?

Although there are proven ways of maximizing the life of your smartwatch battery, there are also do’s and don’ts while charging your smartwatch. My wearable hacks will keep your smartwatch connected, reliable, and effective.

Never drain a smartwatch battery below 20% for maximum battery life and efficiency. Also, don’t keep it at 100% constantly. Apart from carrying a power bank along, keep your smartwatch charged between 20% and 80% for less stress and maximum battery life. Don’t leave a smartwatch plugged in after clocking 100% of the charge.

Overcharging and complete drain could interfere with the chemical technicalities of the smartwatch battery and weaken its optimal functioning. Like most electronic devices, smartwatches use rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Although some manufacturers may replace damaged smartwatch batteries, it would cost you around $10.

Li-ion batteries begin to fade when the manufacturer puts them in the smartwatch. A deep discharge stresses a smartwatch battery as much as a serious charge. According to Battery University, device manufacturers strive to attain maximum battery service life and not necessarily optimize the battery runtime.

Therefore, a smartwatch will not last long if you charge it 100 percent. However, there are other times when a 100 percent charge is an exception. For instance, charge your smartwatch fully if you are traveling without a charger or if you will spend considerable time away from a power source. However, it is recommended to unplug it when it hits 100%.

Overcharging causes overheating of smartwatch batteries, and overheating starts before the battery is fully charged. The temperature rises steadily as charging continues. If your smartwatch gets considerably hot while charging, unplug it. The smartwatch battery can also get hot when using power-hungry apps. 

Excessive temperature and heat caused by overcharging can cause severe problems to your device. The battery may blow up and damage your smartwatch in the worst case. The battery might also start bulging and push out your smartwatch screen. At that point, you will either get a battery replacement or buy a new smartwatch if the current one breaks. 

In a nutshell, always charge a smartwatch to 100% where the next charging time is uncertain. For example, if you are a marathon runner, charging your smartwatch entirely is critical when going for long races and competitions. If you are also hiking in a remote place for days, charging your phone 100% is essential.

Ways to keep your smartwatch sufficiently charged

Mobile and wearable devices with Li-ion batteries will always rely on a power source. That is why power banks are essential for any smartwatch user. There would be no need to charge your smartwatch to 100% or drain it below the recommended values if you had a power bank. 

I use my power bank to keep my Apple Watch S7 battery charge between 20% and 80% for maximum battery life and efficiency. Never below 20 or at 100%. However, if your smartwatch is draining the battery fast, there are several hacks to maximize the battery life.

Here are ten ways to maximize the life of your smartwatch battery:

Do not store or use a smartwatch at high temperatures

Hot temperatures increase the self-discharge rate of your smartwatch battery. The battery capacity weakens, and a smartwatch drops to zero percent in worrying cycles. The same happens if the battery gets hot during charging. Your smartwatch charge holding capacity drops fast.

Avoid charging your smartwatch at low temperatures

According to Battery University, charging your device at cold temperatures raises the internal resistance of smartwatch batteries. 

It takes about three to four hours to charge a smartwatch battery to 100%. If your smartwatch takes more than that, perhaps you are charging it at low temperatures. If it is caused by room temperature, charge your smartwatch when it reaches +5°C to +45°C.

Use the recommended charger for your smartwatch.

The recommended charger is usually the one the manufacturer recommends for your smartwatch. Do not use a fast charger to boost your smartwatch unless necessary. 

Fast chargers do not destroy your battery. However, battery physics suggests that your smartwatch may not hold power longer.  Instead, use a conventional charger.  

Reduce your smartwatch push notifications

If power-saver mode is an extreme way to go about it, go to the application settings and reduce push notifications. Stop all notifications from applications you are not using. Leave only the most important ones, like email notifications.

Carry a power bank

Carry a power bank wherever you go. As I said earlier, you may occasionally find yourself in situations where your mobile and wearable devices beg for a charge. A power bank is portable and will keep your smartwatch recharged when you are on the move.

Lower your smartwatch’s screen brightness

Screen brightness is the leading cause of battery drain in smartwatches. Go to your smartwatch display settings and adjust your screen brightness to half what it is right now. Although that might limit your vision in glaring light, it will add you considerable battery life.

Shorten screen timeout

If you power on your smartwatch screen, how many minutes does it take an idle display to turn off? Go to your smartwatch’s display and brightness screen. Look for Wake Duration and lower it by a few seconds. Also, if the Always-on feature is on, tap it off.  

Use power-saver mode

Find it under your smartwatch’s battery settings. Power-saver mode cuts background processes, concentrating your smartwatch battery on essential tasks. However, if you turn it on, you will not receive incoming emails and updates on your smartwatch. 

Stop using power-hungry smartwatch applications.

Go to your smartwatch’s battery settings and tap on Usage details. You will get a highlight of how the apps are consuming power. Apps like Facebook and fitness apps like Strava are pretty power-hungry. They put a lot of stress on smartwatch batteries. Turn them off if you are not using them.  

Update the smartwatch operating system

Updating the Wear OS of your smartwatch can improve your battery performance. However, about two days after the update, you may notice a significant battery drain because applications are still updating your data from their respective servers. It will be better soon. In Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch, go to settings and tap Download and install the latest OS.

We rely so much on mobile devices like smartwatches. That reliance means your smartwatch should power up your activities without leaving you “hanging.” Charging a smartwatch to 100% and leaving it plugged in for a long time can destroy the battery. Battery University also advises against using the smartwatch until the battery is zero percent.

For maximum battery life and efficiency, never drain a smartwatch battery below 20. Also, don’t keep it at 100% constantly. Apart from carrying a power bank along, keep your smartwatch charged between 20% and 80% at all times.
