Why is smartwatch considered an ICT Tool?

A smartwatch is a portable wearable wristband that acts as a support gadget for the smartphone.

At the present time with the trend of miniaturized technology, many of the smartphone features are compressed and assigned in the smartwatches.

These features are related to information and communication technology and are much easily accessible on the wrist at all times.

ICT tool means Information and communication technology tool.

The smartwatch in this day and age has become an ICT tool because the smartwatch is a digital watch which lays out many other features besides keeping track of time. It is a technology that is used for information and communication which offers advanced tools and services like internet access, e-mail, GPS Tracker and more. People can see and interact with the notifications on the smartwatch. Cellular functionality allows people to make and receive calls without the hassle of picking up a smartphone.

Well, let us go ahead and take a look at some of the key causes that describe why the smartwatches are considered as an ICT tool.

Instant Alert and Notifications

The big thing about a smartwatch is that you get a ton of notifications on your wrist.

Being connected to the smartphone most of the time the smartwatch displays all the phone notifications and app notifications like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, calendar alerts, news alerts, text messages and calls. The stand-alone smartwatches which have a sim card and a working data plan display many other notifications that are specifically customized for these watches only.

These independent smartwatches are a bit more expensive than that of Bluetooth connected smartwatches. It is very convenient and there is no need to pull out your smartphone again and again from your pocket or bag.

“Find Phone” Feature

Most of the smartwatches come with the ‘Find Phone’ feature. If you lose your phone, car key or any other device you can locate it very easily with the use of your smartwatch.

It keeps a record of your location and when the device is mapped with the smartwatch you can ring it through your watch to find it whenever you want.

Applications

Smartwatches run applications depending upon the operating systems that they are linked with eg.

Google or Apple. Access to the internet enables a smartwatch to install different apps on the watch and it acts as a controller to ‘Smart Home’ technology.

Home automation allows you to control garage doors, electrical appliances and other smart devices by integrating them with the smartwatch.

Media Management

Listening to music is also one of the distinguishing features of the smartwatches. It plays back all sorts of digital media, gives the control to pause, change the song or adjust the volume.

For entertainment, you can watch videos or full-length movies on the smartwatch, but the quality of the small screen can never be compared with the smartphone screen.

Calls and Texts Management

Making or receiving calls is very easy on the smartwatch when you can’t get to your smartphone.

It makes a noticeable vibration on the watch even if you are in a noisy environment.

The Apple Watch OS and Google Wear Operating System support voice dictation by which you can easily answer a call because almost all the smartwatches have in-built speakers and microphones.

if you don’t have much time to type the message you can use the voice feature and the message will be sent forth.

Voice Assistant

Siri by Apple, Bixby by Samsung, and Google Assistant by Google are some of the Artificial Intelligence Assistants that use voice recognition to perform several tasks or services.

By using the default wake word you can ask it any question or execute any task like set reminders, timers, alarms, weather forecast, send texts and play music.

Siri and Google Assistant work pretty well but Bixby is a bit slow and a little bit laggy. Sometimes it takes about 5 to 6 seconds to process the task.

Health and Fitness Tracking

A good smartwatch provides the benefit of a healthy lifestyle along with the fashionable look and many other features.

So instead of buying a fitness band or pedometer you should invest in a well established company’s smartwatch.

Modern smartwatches can keep track of steps,

distance, calories burned, heart rate, blood pressure, pulse rate.

These watches have a list of workout activities like running, cycling, walking, weight lifting, swimming etc.

Unlike fitness trackers, you don’t have to use your phone, the results of the activities are directly displayed on the smartwatches.

Navigation and NFC Support

The GPS feature of the smartwatch tracks your location and gives alert of any specific location.

You don’t have to constantly look at your mobile phone, the directions are directly sent to your watch, guiding you when and where to turn next.

For visually impaired people this feature can work as an ideal navigation guide.

Some of the smartwatches possess NFC that allows you to make cashless payments.

You don’t have to carry credit cards or your phone with you to make any payment. The smartwatch can do it all wherever the device accepts online payments.

Battery

The smartphone has a big, high-resolution display that results in the fast drainage of the battery.

However, smartwatches nowadays are coming with powerful batteries and because of the tiny screen, they do not consume that much battery.

With the pace of technological developments, the smartwatch companies have introduced different modes to save battery consumption depending on the needs of the consumer.

Although the smartwatch is connected to the smartphone at all times, the connection via bluetooth does not consume that much battery power.

In terms of wearable technology, smartwatches have made a name for being the most popular accessory available today.

They are getting more affordable day by day and offering many features rather than just telling the time.

With the basic knowledge of smartwatch and a good internet connection you can utilize the watch to its fullest.

As of today, the most trending types of smartwatches are:

1.Apple watch OS:

The capabilities, performance and connectivity functions of the smartwatches are improving everyday but because of its small size, the limited battery it can never perform all the actions of a smartphone.
